Would be nice there was a way to quickly activate cores without needing to click them with WASD movement enabled.

You can double click them at any time to activate them. At least, you should... if there's a problem, might be a bug report-
Yes you can but somethings going from keyboard play to mouse is just longer then being able to slap a Spatial Core with your hands like you can with doors, chests & locks.
