A song about how Jerry's chaotic life and fleeting relationships have led him down a lonely path. It first talks about how his past haunts him and prevents him from living a normal life. It elaborates on the fact he doesn't feel satisfied with any endeavors as nothing he does fills the void in his heart. He yearns to be "free" of this cycle and of his past, feeling trapped in a constant state of having to run. Then it further talks about the pursuit of temporary comforts in other people and how it never lasts, in part due to his past once again. The gosts of his past aren't only literal though, but also a representation of the person he has become as a result of his experiences, a person who is trapped in this lifestyle. Someone who has known only chaos, instability and crime, and can't mentally adapt or try to settle down, always chasing the highs of his former life despite how awful it was.

"Desperado" is the lonely outlaw who is always on the road, and is never satisfied. It's a word that tries to encompass his identity and struggle.
