Albedo

An old alchemist organization that eventually merged with ex-members of the Mage's Guild for the purpose of freedom in magical research, as well as tapping into the limitless knowledge of the Akashic Record. In the modern era, this work continues, but has become known as a haven for necromancers, liches, and other morally grey arcanists that are not accepted by the Mage's Guild.

History

Albedo has existed for hundreds of years in limited capacities, although it was not always known by this name. Originally, it began as an alchemist circle, but branched out into magic study as the two arts became intertwined. Eventually, the Mage's Guild was founded, drawing with it many of those interested in the arcane arts. However, members of Albedo found these mages to be 'stiff', preferring to keep to their ways rather than join a larger collective who they felt would derail their research. The Mage's Guild did not particularly wish to be associated with Albedo either, given one of its founders developed the Lich ritual, something that to this day remains extremely taboo.

Albedo still exists in the modern day for the same reasons as it did in old times; to serve as a haven for those who wish to explore all aspects of magic, regardless of the consequences.

Members

Albedo is not a rigidly structured group; instead its members are drawn together by a common interest in pushing boundaries and developing their craft. Their ranks mostly contain those without moral or ethical reservations in this pursuit, qualities that have led to them being put at odds with the Mage's Guild. Given their rival's prevalence and influence, members of Albedo do not usually make their affiliation with the organization public, so as to avoid interference from the Guild or locals who may 'misunderstand' what they do. They do, however, carry a magical black stone that serves as a symbol of membership.

Not all members of Albedo have the same goals. Some simply wish for a place to practice their magic without persecution. This means that all under the umbrella of Albedo are not really allies, and those that draw harmful attention to the group may find themselves ousted or exterminated by other members.

Goals

Albedo, beyond its interest in magical research, has two major goals that they work towards, to the benefit of all its members.

  1. Achieve contact with the Akashic Record. This is also one of the Mage's Guild's goals, but there are many differences in approach.
  2. Normalize the taboo aspects of their methods, such as necromancy, homunculi creation, etc., by influencing, persuading, or replacing political figures.

Headquarters

Albedo Headquarters exist at an underground location, although the details of exactly where are unknown. This place can only be accessed through teleportation. The black magical stone which serves as a symbol of their membership also allows them to utilize the few direct portals to Albedo Headquarters in unknown places, or to re-route Majistran Mage's Guild portals to it mid-way (often travelling in groups to avoid suspicion).

It is similar to Karaten with its mage-like design, containing several private laboratories and other facilities, where its members may collaborate or engage in commerce.
