The Mad Vine does not move until the Legume is killed. It's to the east, though, not the south. EDIT: okay, it's sometimes to the south, too.

Hell, I even moved beside the sleeping Critter like so:


And the Mad Vine continues to stand there and do nothing. Only after was the Critter killed did it move and attack.
