In modern times, due to the Geneva Convention, its actually extremely easy to find mercenaries performing noncombat roles.
Unfortunately im hard pressed to find any information on mercenaries during Ancient/middle age times. The Roman Army did employ heavy use of mercenaries as specialist though, so assuming they ever found a slave who was knowledgeable in medicine he would most likely be forced as a doctor.
tl;dr hiring healers in D&D is easy and +1 to moar mercs, especially if they praise Mercala.
