There isn't really anything to "use", besides the item mounts, so it probably shouldn't be giving the message for those items. And the items mounts do not show the "Only the house owner can change the mode of this object" message, nor do they allow you to actually do anything to them if you are not the home-owner.

Also, what Rendar said about it being multi-tile items that give you the "Must be closer" message.
