In order of personal preference and professionalism:

http://pixlr.com/ -> Use Magic Wand to highlight all background, then Eraser tool on highlighted sections.

http://www180.lunapic.com/editor/ -> Literally has a button for it, may have to fiddle with Tolerance levels. Good for solid colour backgrounds.

Saving as .dmi is also nice for reducing filesize, in case somebody didn't know this yet.

EDIT: Hell, if you're using BYOND to make the .dmi, you can set alpha to 0 (slidey bar next to colour selection, last I saw) and use Fill tool to remove background easy, too.
