It's not meant to be a replacement for mechs at all. It's juat the ancient version of mechs. The idea is that we cannot make golems in the modern day, it's tied to ancient forgotten history.
Modern mechs could definitely exist as well. No real reason for them not to exist aside from lack of llarian scar lore in korvara
