Let me be blunt:
"Faceicon State" are sorely missed by some SL2 players. The ability to convey emotion through your face in the chat log without emoting the exact details of the curl of a smirk or the tone of pink of a blush go a long way towards enhancing RP.
These were removed a long time ago, with the justification being "Iconcrashing" where someone uploading a new non .dmi icon would crash other players if they didn't relog first.
Considering the faceicon state change REQUIRES .dmi files to work, this literally changes nothing.
In fact, while loading a new faceicon without reloading currently shows a skewed zoomed variant to others without causing crashing, partying/trading with someone who has not relogged still causes this problem, and some people try to upload new faceicons on the fly due to faceicon states no longer being an option.
Could we please bring them back for a -TRIAL- run, at least?

I can confirm personally that .dmi icons never caused any crashes when I didn't relog fresh out of character creation. I'd even walk to crowded areas and go "((Crash Test))" just to see people's reactions. The crashes came (and STILL come) from non .dmi files, which don't work with faceicon states anyways.
Again, it's your game and I'm not trying to tell you how to run it, but the fact remains that myself and several others did test and confirm this before they were removed completely. I feel it's at least worth checking out again.

If anyone sees your icon in the party/trade things before one of you relogs, they crash.
Literally every single time.
I don't know what it is you're doing, but that's certainly not a 'BYOND issue'.

Easy solution: changing your face icon state boots you from the server, forcing you to relog.

Exactly. It has nothing to do with the faceicon state thing. Since faceicon states are a single .dmi file that contains multiple portraits, so multiple uploads are not needed. In fact, last I checked (months ago, mind you) they actually show in the party status at the top of the screen without showing in the chat log, and cause no issues.

Anything tied to crashing Dreamseeker is a BYOND issue. All I do is Blend the face icon with the background, call fcopy_rsc on the blended icon, and set the image in trade to the reference returned by it. BYOND should be properly caching it, but it doesn't, so Dreamseeker crashes.
If it's still crashing, that's an issue. I haven't heard anyone mention it doing so though, until now, if it is.

I'd be happy to provide examples in person. Of the party/trade crashing thing, I mean. It's hard to screenshot, so it would be easier to show you directly.
I can 100% confirm it happens every time. Been this way for at least a few months. I seem to recall encountering it when Hyattr were pretty new as well, so it's been a consistent issue. It's just not as widespread since people KNOW to simply relog when they upload a new portrait.

Perhaps each character should have five face icon slots to use for states, disguises,
or what have you, and they're all loaded every time you log in, and stay loaded
until you log out. Then it wouldn't matter what type of image they are, and since no
files are being put into the cache on the fly, Dreamseeker shouldn't crash.
When you first create a character, all five of your face icon slots are given the 'blank'
blue icon we have now.

I just did some testing with 2 of my keys to manually confirm everything I posted.
Characters used:
Tara Weiss-Etrama (Key: Talithmara)
Aena Slade (Key: Ranylyn)
Images used:
Tara's default Faceicon (.bmp)
Tara's mother's (Sarah Weiss - Deceased) old .dmi icon with 3 states
Gawain Cross's (one of my other characters) old .dmi Icon with 5 states.
Steps used to repeatedly test what does and does not cause crashing:
- Tara initiates trade with Aena. Works fine.
- Tara changes to another icon, then back to her own. Trades with Aena. Aena crashes.
- Aena relogs. Trade again. Works fine.
- Changes to Sarah's icon. Mucks with icon states. Shows in party bar. Initiates trade. Works fine; shows default state regardless.
- Switches back to Tara's icon to confirm. New trade. Aena crashes.
- Aena relogs. New trade to test. Works fine. Switches to Gawain's icon. Works fine. Sarah's icon also works fine.
End verdict:
- .dmi icons are totally safe and do not induce crashing. And Multiple icon states require .dmi icons anyways.
I'd be happy to replicate this test with anyone who wishes to confirm my tests.
