historically speaking people stopped using armor because of guns, guns pierce armor, period, it wasn't until the advent of ballistic proof armor that is designed to survive a certain number of shots that we actually started wearing armor again.

Specifically we stopped using plate/mail style armor because after the first few bullets dented it , when it was pierced the armor itself became a protrusion of metal sticking into you.
