Swords have, pretty sure, the most weapon skills in the game. By far.

That is the bonus that they get over Axes and spears, currently. Whenever those two weapon types get more skills/classes that revolve entirely around them besides DH and more-or-less Soldier? Then I'd be fine with swords maybe getting a buff. However, as it stands, you're also not bringing up the state of Bows in terms of skills, how wonky half of the bows scaling are.

How many stats an archer needs if they are an Arbalest... etc.

This is a problem with some/most weapons, not just swords.
