I once thought up a "transmutation" thing that takes two or so of a certain object to make one another certain object.
Like, list the things together, so 2 zelegrand leaves don't make 1 blue flame. It might make a bit more sense than crushing down said leaves for gunpowder or whatever. Don't know about the food part as most tend to be cooked and proper storing probably isn't /that/ advanced yet.
