A tale of two students |

A candle flickers in a dark room, illuminating only a few dusty stacks of parchment. The occasional sound of flipping pages is heard, along with a young girl's voice.
"I still don't get why we need to be in the dark..." says the voice, seeming a little bothered.
A second, less feminine voice replies earnestly. "Don't be afraid. This candle's light--"
The soft-spoken girl interrupts. "I-I'm not afraid; I just can't read like this. Can't we turn a real light on? The Salamander System--"
"--is based on an impure power, stolen by those godless heathens in Kysei. Do you want to be like them, sweet sister?", inquires the boy.
"You sound just like my da-- our father already," complains the girl with a sigh.
"Do I?" he questions. "I'm glad you think so," he adds before a reply can be given.
"...Anyway, how's it all going? You two spend a lot of time in his study," she asks.
"Father has been showing me-- teaching me things. We understand one another. It... feels good. I'm happy."
The room begins to light up with a golden glow, and the boy slowly backs away while turning to face the source. He stops in his tracks.
The two children were wearing robes of clear Mercalan design, likely intended to be worn by someone older based on their size.
He stares with a blank expression, the source of the light now obvious to him. The girl had cast a simple spell to illuminate the room.
"Are you sure?" she asks, skeptical of his words. "I mean... You never smile."

Silence: The Musical. Wait, what? |

So the recent thread about Silent Prayer (See: http://www.neus-projects.net/viewtopic.p...amp;t=2646) got me thinking. And I didn't want to derail that topic.
Silence, right now, is in a very awkward place. It's either debilitating to a fault, or a complete nonissue. Attacks that do damage and can apply Silence (like Cutthroat, Nightflower weapons, etc) are good because the mage spends 3m removing the silence, while skills like Absolute Fear are like "... congratulations, you both wastred 3M on a pointless tradeoff."
So that got me thinking about the larger issue: Silence itself.
Silence is a complete shutdown to an unprepared mage. As such, every caster who does any PVP is required to be prepared for it. This leads to a very awkward predicament where silence is both amazing and useless at the same time, because it can just be removed as easily as it's applied, but removing it is a must.
So I got to thinking: What if Silence was replaced by a % Chance to fail a spell, like with hesitation?
Just hear me out: It indirectly gives a buff to skills that cause silence without doing damage, because the mage may decide it's not worth 3m to remove it, so the effect is not wasted if it does pull through. It also nerfs skills that cause Damage + Silence to be less debilitating to a mage, since it doesn't effectively rob the mage of 3M guaranteed.
We'd need to rename the ailment, of course, but it may not be a bad idea, considering.

I'm not naming names. Not saying it's everyone. But you know who you are. Be ashamed.
Don't be a dick. If a player has no interest in PVP, don't give them a hard time over it. By all means, feel free to explain that the Meta is all about that PVP and that they won't likely enjoy themselves long term if they aren't interested in it, but don't tell them off for having the gall to explore the game's PVE instead of just begging to be grindmage'd. If a player is using a material that isn't carapace or rockdirt, you don't need to tell them to get the fuck out. Player finds a magmic weapon early on, really appreciates that +2 power and wasn't even critting anyways, don't verbally abuse them over magmic being their only non-iron option. If a player's weapons aren't +40 crit, maybe consider they can't afford the 500 murai people charge for parts yet, before bashing them for their percieved retardation in not maxing out top tier gear by level 8?
I've invited a few people to SL2 lately. Not one has stuck around. I wonder why? "Oh, cool, Ether auto-repairs after every fight? That'll be useful for grinding." Cue incredibly abraisive response that they should be using +5 weight weapons with their max BW of 9, or they can get bent? Really?
New players aren't going to start with 10 LEs under their belt, and neither did you, so cut the sass and don't be an ass.

Silent Prayer sucks. Really bad.
It's worse than a throatopener in that it costs SP, FP, a skill slot, doesn't give good medicine, is only available to one base class, and can't be used on allies. I think throatopener might even restore FP if you have Mercalan Tenets.
The only upside to it is that it saves you an item slot, which basically means at the very most, a Priest can get +1 Wil/Fai for using it over a throatopener.
I once suggested giving it a 2 round immunity to Silence, and given that it can't be used in advance (you have to be silenced already) I still think that's more than fair.

I had a thought about more application of void portals and the idea occurred to me to use a small void portal to redirect an in-coming attack or projectile to throw it at someone else near me. So a Ski or Cel % chance to redirect a weapon attack from you to a nearby foe within 1 range, or possible a little more. Perhaps it also would be able to redirect attacks from you to foes near void gates? Even the foe who attacked could be affected by this. It's not like turning things in extradimentional space to go completely back around is impossible or even difficult. Also, this should probably check hit.
'When you're surrounded severely outnumbered, some times the only way out is if the enemy just start killing each other. But why would they do that?'
I'm not sure how rank scaling would work here for the sake of balancing. It could have five ranks with with +X% change per rank. It could have three ranks and increase in redirection range by rank (up to 3 range incoming and outgoing). Or it could just be a one-pointer with flat 'Stat percent chance' in melee range'. Another idea I have is that it adds Evade based on rank and works only if you dodge the skill successfully. At that point, it could be a very high or 100% chance to redirect.
Would this be a defensive skill? Passive? Toggle passive?

Whynesfelt does not seem to disable enemy spells for one turn in PVE. Enemies remain perfectly content to spam the same spell on successive turns.
Untested in PVP.

Evoking Phase Fang with Sync Mind seems VERY finicky in whether the non-frontal variation teleports you at all. Sometimes you just stay there. I'm not counting misses, only hits.
It's possible that it picks enemy and side at random and I'm being plunked in the same spot, I guess, since it seems to fail more frequently when there's less enemies. The description makes it sound like it's intended to be a different enemy, however.
Untested with Phase Python itself since I has just recently acquired it on the character I noticed this on, and it can't hit enemies my level. I have a proper Phase Python user I can go confirm on later, if further testing is needed.

When you go to use the "deposit in global bank" verb with the Golden Lockpick and Golden Pickaxe the player UI freezes on the Inventory Screen and you're unable to close it, forcing a relog. Both items suffer from the same bug it seems (I can't imagine this was intentional).
